Lagers are bottom fermented, cool temperature fermented, aged
beers ("Lager" in German means to "store"). A rye lager is
typically dark due to the high composition of rye. Lagers lack any
harsh characteristics as they mellow from aging. A lager is
typically crisp, clean, smooth and light compared to top fermented
styles. Characteristically lagers usually lack the fruity flavor tones
or complex flavor profiles found in ales. A typical lager taste is
simply light malt, grains, varying levels of noble hops, and
significant carbonation. Rye lagers of course have rye flavor, and
rye beer is typically less sweet than other styles. Rye lagers stand
as an interesting alternative to wheat beers, though less popular
to date.
