Porters are always dark to ink black in color. Porters are top
fermented and thus have ale qualities. Porters typically use in excess
of 90% pale malts and the remainder patent malt (roasted barley
malt). The porter style shares flavor characteristics with stouts
although porters are usually a smoother and lighter presentation of
these flavors. Characteristic is the mildly "burnt" flavor component.
Typically medium bodied, light coffee or chocolate flavor tones are
present in some examples of the style.
