Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Lagunitas Brewing Co., Petaluma, CA
This is not the orginal Pale Ale as brewed in far away 1993 in the back of
the Old House of Richards Building in the West Marin hamlet of Forest
Knolls right next to little Lagunitas. It is way better. Back then the beer
tasted like broccoli and kerosene and the carbonation ate right through
and drained your stomach into your gut.
Appearance
A nice medium golden tone, clear and effervescent, slightly off-white
head is initially tall, foamy, and airy, of moderate duration with light
lacing. Dazzling and effervescing. Carbonation swirls like a torrent in a
clear orange gold. Lasting medium white head.
Aroma
Strong aroma, a full IPA -like hop bouquet, I am getting grapefruit,
lemon & lime zest, and a little orange peel. Impressively complex for
the pale ale style of beer. Heavy citrus and piny hop. Lotsa orange and
grapefruit, an eye opening tangy and zesty blend.
Palate
Crisp and light, initial flavors are lemon citrus and carbonation zing
with a touch of hop. Not bad but not as exciting as I had hoped. Starts
with a grapefruit flavor. Tart and light sweet, a little silky, a little cutting,
seemingly a one or two note beer but I think closer inspection will
reveal more.
Finish
Hops abound, a bit more like an IPA than a plain pale ale. Has a
grapefruit and lemon peel zest in the background, but the hops
definitely carry the day in the finish. Not really any sweetness or
balance to speak of at this stage. Finish flows from the palate well, no
real transition other than a fortifying hop. Though some of the sours of
grapefruit remain, the acidic hop bite provides a crispness typical of
an IPA.
Synopsis
More like a strong IPA than a typical pale ale. The aroma was great,
but the strong hop tended to overshadow the other components that
were trying to make this a complex beer. The hops predominated to
make this seem almost one note by hiding the "ale" part of this pale
ale. I appreciate Lagunitas attempts at big flavors. I like the grapefruit
flavor platform for the presentation of a well hopped ale. Perhaps with
more balance to the hop this would've scored better.

Appearance
Orange-ish copper color but with a fair amount of cloudiness. Off-white head
is medium to tall, airy and foamy, with moderate duration and light lacing.
Robust gold with a short rocky head. Mildly cloudy, but good overall. This
lager is effervescent with small bubbles.
Aroma
Strong for a lager, sweet malts and orange and lime citrus sweet and sour,
very nice.
A nice style presentation of a German Dortmunder. Flavors of aroma are
nicely balanced, sweet and relaxed.
Palate
A full flavored lager, crisp, more sweetness of malt then many lager beers,
and a slight sweet orange citrus tone mixed in with the grain.
A sweet lager beer, that is lightly hopped but with the substance. The sugars
almost have a honeycomb quality. For a lager beer this is creamy from a
texture standpoint.
Finish
A Saaz like hopped note briefly takes over, then alternates with a light sweet
malt, sweet citrus, grains, hops, and even a lime peel citrus zest.
A little tanginess underneath a semi sweet. Good malt with salt and the
addition of mild hop. This beer continues to blend and heighten in
creaminess.
Synopsis
A very enjoyable lager beer, more full flavor and complex than most. In
addition to the requisite carbonation, hop, and grains, there are some ale
like citrus components. The malt is sweeter than most, sort of a mixture
between a lager and a maibock, but with some hops.
I was always fond of Thirsty Dogs Balto lager. As far as I know that beer
went away. This is true to the Dortmunder style as the former was more of a
straightforward lager. I miss the Balto but maybe nostalgia prevails because
I drink way too much beer.
Labrador lager is as quintessential as the breed itself. True to style down
to the European hops and yeast. Loyalty following the German brewing
traditions of lagering (aging). When you unleash the flavor of this light
golden colored, perfectly balanced beer, you too will become a loyal friend
of Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.

Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Lagunitas Brewing Co., Petaluma, CA

Appearance
A nice dark golden brown, a brilliant reddish brown when held to a light.
Clear and effervescent. Head is a light tan, medium ht., airy yet creamy, with
nice thick lacing on the glass. A nice dark ruby red. Clean and
well-carbonated. The head has a rockiness and terrific lacing in this medium
bodied ale. A very good looking and inviting brew.
Aroma
Good strength, a strong piney hop nose, some trailing sweet malt and sweet
cherry scents and very faint roasted coffee scents. Hoppy and citrusy.
Orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime. A basket of fresh fruit aromas along with
some warmth and caramel roast character to a hidden platform of malt. With
all this, the hops dominate, we will see if this brew reaches a balance.
Palate
Flavorful right away. The texture is a bit thin for an ale but there is a bit of
creaminess to this ales credit. The initial flavors are a lightly sweet malt,
cherry citrus, and almost an even balance of hop. This deserves the Imperial
designation, big on flavor with mild malt sweetness, some nuttiness, a dull
roast, and some alcohol heat all layered beneath a strong bouquet of hops.
Finish
Picks up some nice additional creaminess, the hops really predominate
here, followed by a quality black coffee essence and the sweetness is left
sinking into the distance background. Heavy hop acid is just slightly
tempered with the depth of sugars that seem pleasantly "burnt". Some
convergence of darker flavors but the hop is still controlling.
Synopsis
An interesting beer, attractive, and basically complex with piny hop, cherry
citrus, light sweet malt, and black coffee flavors. I think the hops are slightly
overdone in the finish for the overall ale style, but the transition of the coffee
flavor was nicely done and unexpected. A medium fortifying ale with a heavy
hop carries the day (84.2 IBU). As mentioned, there are alot of flavor
components, I can't help but to harken back to the predominance of hop. I
see the balance being a little off-kilter if you are not an exclusive IPA drinker
(this is marketed as an ale, NOT and IPA). Drinking with a fried food will sand
out the rough edges.

Tucher Brewing, Germany
Appearance
Fairly attractive dopplebock beer, a dark mahogany brown, a slightly
cloudy brownish red when held to a light. Head is a light tan of moderate
height and duration. Lacing on the glass is minimal. A hearty light brown
to dark red. Some light lacing on a sticky sweet platform with a small fluffy
beige head.
Aroma
Decent strength, a true bock style aroma. Strong sweet malt with a bit of
chocolate and alcohol tone, with even lighter lime citrus in the
background. Sweet and nutty with a little warmth. Burnt caramel sugars
with a light fruity background of grape and plum. Soft and acceptable
cereal notes.
Palate
Strong, full, and sweet, definitive bock style malts with light chocolate
tones and light level of grains. Smooth, fluffy, and silky. A true German
dopplebock. Heavy malts and typical bock flavors presented as a duality
with crisp and inviting water.
Finish
An already full flavor gets even more full ! A pleasant sweet malt, an
intense but only semi-sweet chocolate, light lime citrus, some
graininess, and a mild salt component enters the mix. All of the above
palate qualities with a little tannin. Cereal and sweet characteristics with
caramel thickness battling with the clean water crispness in a non-hoppy
traditional example of the dopplebock style of beer.
Synopsis
No doubt, a definitive example of the dopplebock style. As mentioned, the
requisite dark sweet malts, chocolate, mild alcohol warmth, mild salt,
and lack of hoppiness are present as expected in this beer. A few
American breweries are finally starting to put out some respectable
examples of this style
( Commemorator, Consecrator, and VooDoo Vator on our site for
example). I hope to see more American micro-breweries tackling this
style. A good German dopplebock that doesn't climb to new heights, but
provides a good example of a traditional style of beer. Not even my
favorite dopplebock but plenty good, n0 let-downs for the dopplebock
enthusiast.

Appearance
A great Porter appearance, black with no light getting through. Head is a
med. dark tan, tall, thick, creamy, a little chunky, long lasting, and this
porter has excellent lacing on the glass. Dark for even a porter, and
more importantly, the proper body for a porter. Fluffy beige to brown
head impresses as well.
Aroma
Decent strength overall, full but not overbearing roasted malt., coffee,
nutty, and woody scents, some alcohol tones and just a pinch of
tanginess. Complex array of components. Strong coffee to expresso
with some interesting hop spice and floral notes. Just a bit of mild
sweet to offset a powerful roast.
Palate
Great strength level, a penetrating and tasty roasted malt, just a touch of
tanginess, not much sweet, with a bit of carbonation and a bit of
creaminess. A solid grainy coffee with chocolate and licorice. Robust as
the name implies. The balance is slightly off-kilter but good as a whole.
Strong character for a porter that is both silky and chalky in mouthfeel.
Finish
The palate to finish transition is as smooth as silk. The deep roasted
gives up some ground for a delicious black coffee flavor and interesting
wood tones, not whiskey barrel wood, just wood. There is a hint of
chocolate in the background but no significant sweetness to speak of.
Rich but growingly dry. The brew loses its silkiness and thins out a bit.
A nice bouquet of flavors remains despite the change in texture.
Synopsis
Absolutely wonderful. If you want to experience a porter you really can't
go wrong here. A ton of deep roasted malt, coffee, woody flavors. Has
almost a complete absence of sweetness but that is not a detriment to
the porter style. I found the bottle label ugly, but don't judge this beer by
its cover ! I liked this porter and any general porter fan should also. We
are just beginning to experience the Smuttynose brewery but I imagine
they excel in darker brews.
